Pillar

Pillar, originally uploaded by LightAsMagic.

Although this post will soon be buried behind countless numbers of ‘previous entries’ buttons, the significance of the first post is overwhelming. I wasn’t able to decide between a satirical self portait from high school photography class (well over 20yrs ago) or an image that represented a personal breakthrough in my commitment to the craft. Obviously I went with the later. This is a special image to me for a very singular reason. I did it. I ride by this rock several times a week on my evening mountain bike rides. Every time I do, I say to myself that would make a great image. Finally, after years of saying that to myself, I went and made it happen. It is a personal reminder that there are millions of images in the world that have yet to me made, but they don’t make themselves.

I know exactly what you mean – I’m taking photographs every day on the way to and from work “in my head”. As you so appropriately put, “they don’t make themselves”

This picture is excellent! Since it is so close to you, you might try throwing some warmed flash on the pillar (if it isn’t too big) and getting it to “pop” against a slightly under exposed blue sky. Maybe you can make it an annual picture that you post…..

Right on, someone discovered the first post! That is a great idea. I have also considered trying some light painting with it. I almost made it there last night, but the sunset from the place I was at was just too nice to pass up.

I really like the light painting idea – that sounds promising – looking forward to that post down the line.

  1. [...] I just want to take a second to thank everyone who visits here on a regular basis. LightAsMagic.com is now over a year old and growing everyday. I always appreciate the feedback from those out in the community. I hope to add some new features and content this year that will benefit everyone. If you like the photography, the adventure, or both please pass along the site to others who might enjoy a bit of levity in their day. I can’t spread the word without you. In honor of this milestone, I thought I would take a look back at the very first post from July 31, 2009. [...]

I would love to hear from you
