The Unpainted Desert – Part III

Getting to this image was quite the adventure. A plastic skeleton on the side of the road caught our attention so we pulled over to follow several handmade signs that led us across a river, over a couple of miles of unmaintained roads, and down a sandy hill through a gully. Luckily the Yoda (the nickname of my Toyota Truck) got us out. I guess the lesson to be learned is follow plastic skeletons on the side of the road at your own risk. Tomorrow the Grand Canyon at sunrise!

For The Photographers: Here is a quick before and after I thought you might be interested in. The top image is the initial image out of Lightroom. The bottom image is the final version after exercising the awe inspiring power of Nik Silver Efex Pro II. You might notice I leveraged the new ‘Selective Color’ feature offered in SEP II. I wasn’t sure I was going to use it much, but I have found that I dig it. You can find another use of it my Big Fish Story.

  1. Great composition Justin. I just love the hint of the color in the rock. Well done.

  2. Agreed. The composition is classic. I like the sweeping road (not really much of a road) and the overall look. Excellent!

  3. Start calling you Ansel! Another killer image!

  4. Just beautiful Justin. Perfect composition and the B&W conversion is fantastic.

  5. Very Nice!

  6. Dynamite image, Mr. Balog. Wow… very powerful composition and processing. Well done.

  7. Justin, this is gorgeous. I purchased NIK Silver Efex Pro recently (through your link) and am absolutely loving it so far. I’m thrilled that you’re doing this Unpainted Desert series at just the right time for me. I can’t thank you enough for showing the image in Lr before processing. It really helps to understand how important processing is to your final results.
