iPhone Adams

Ansel Adams Scripps Pier

I’m sorry about missing a post, it’s unlike me. I try my best to stick to the schedule of Monday through Friday. Thanks for hanging in there.

I was away in La Jolla, CA working on a new photographer’s travel guide. While I was out there, I wanted to try and recreate a famous Ansel Adams photo with my iPhone. If you’re not familiar with is work, you can find the image I tried to recreate here. I know where the iPhone differs, but I’d like to here your thoughts first.

Comments

  1. Rick Louie says:

That’s a pretty good rendition, Ansel! It looks like the weather was a little darker in your rendition so in Ansel’s the bridge and the city in the distance were a little more of a silhouette. At least you got the a bird in the image!

  2. Colleen Logan says:

I actually like your shot better. The stormy sky and white caps in the water make it a much more interesting photo.

  3. Isn’t it amazing what great photos the iPhone takes? The main difference I can see between the photographs is that Ansel’s was taken on a “brighter” day, therefore, the reflection in the water. Keep up your awesome work!

  4. A.Barlow says:

Nice one here man. Looks good. Dramatic.

  5. Its all about the light. The light makes the shot. Its cool you found the same spot though and tried to replicate it. I would love to try and recreate some of his Yosemite photos.

  6. Edith Levy says:

I can’t click to see the Ansel enlarged but it seems (in addition to what others have said) that there’s more detail in the sand in your shot. Also there were no guardrails on the pier back then. Great job on this.

  7. Robert Cannady says:

Awesome rendition, Justin! Ansel would be pleased. For me, the most significant difference is in the lighting. That said, I love your shot. Do you?

  8. Justin says:

First of all, I would like to thank everyone for their kind words. I was excited to hear from so many new readers. When you leave a comment, it helps me remember my mission here…to share the beauty of this world with others. Thanks again! Now, for the image.

There are a couple of technical differences. Ansel’s focal length was a bit longer than mine which made for a slightly tighter shot. He was also a touch higher. Maybe a story or two above me. I don’t know the exact location I shot it at, so I can’t say for sure. Yep, the light is different. I was shooting in much softer light. I’m pretty sure I was shooting about the same time of year based on the location of the setting sun. The other significant difference is he shot it first. This image was his vision. Which I think makes it totally cool! Yes, the adventure of finding this location and shooting a similar image with a much more portable device was very exciting. However, in the end, this is his place and his image and I’m just happy I was able to stand where he stood and try to see what he saw.

Thanks again everyone for chiming in!

    Justin

I would love to hear from you
