Sunset On The Rockies

About the time I shot this image up on Jones Pass, I did this! My buddy Rick Louie from Hansrico.com photographed my celebration.

Tip: If you noticed, I shot this image with a pretty long lens (80-200). If you are just getting into photography, don’t equate landscape photography to wide angle lenses. If you can only get one lens, get a mid range zoom. If you can get two lenses, get a wide and a telephoto. Telephoto lenses are great tools for images like this. They are capable of compressing and emphasizing the tonal recession (Dave Wilson word).

Capture Notes:

  • Nikon D700
  • Nikon 80-200 AFD 2.8
  • Gitzo Traveler

Processing Notes:

Capture – 1 image
Lightroom 4

  1. Oh man, love this one, Justin. Wish I had been there too!

  2. That was an awesome sunset!

  3. I love this shot Justin. The silhouette of the mountains and the colors of the sky are just awesome. Great shot that Rick took of you as well.

  4. These are great. Love the second one.

  5. Thanks for the shout, Justin. I love this kind of shot but don’t get to travel to suitable mountain regions very often, unfortunately!

  6. Beautiful shot and composition. I struggle with sunsets and sunrises. How did you meter for the shot?

    • Howdy! Thanks for the kind words. I’m a big exposure compensation guy. Most of the time, I will be in Martix Metering and take a normal exposure. Then I will just start dialing down the exposure using my exposure compensation dial. I’m guessing this was 2-3 stops underexposed according to my camera.

      I hope that helps!
