Flight

I hope everyone enjoyed their holiday weekend. I hit the tofurkey pretty hard! I’ve got a great week lined up for you. I hope you like it.

I’ve said it before, but I’m not much of a wildlife photographer. I don’t have the patience for it. However, when I see a crane flying by and my camera is at the ready I do what I can. Well, I think this is a crane. Remember, I’m not a much of a wildlife photographer….which means I don’t know too much about birds.

  1. Hey Justin,
Great picture. Where did you take it? It might be an egret. We have lots of them near the bay.

  2. It is a snowy egret. Great capture Justin.

  3. Great capture of a snowy egret Justin.

  4. Beautiful shot. Especially capturing in the air! Just downloaded the next book for this week. Last weeks book really got me thinking differently and I can only imagine what this book will have me thinking!

    Hi Justin,

Looks like I won a free e-book from last week. I haven’t seen an email. Have you contacted the winners yet?

    Scott

  6. Scott Starks says:

One last question. I didn’t see if previous winners are eligible to win in subsequent weeks. While I’ll likely continue to “read along” I don’t want to go against the rules :)

  7. thanks for the e book prize justin!!! much appreciated. now off to download and read 10 more!! just a heads up….i have the whole NIK collection, so if you pull my name for that in the future, i’d like you to give it to another person on here. thanks!!

  8. That is a great catch for someone who does shoot birds often Justin. I am like that too and when I try, I realize that it takes some great skill.

  9. Ok…I guess my M.O. Will be not choosing just one! This week it was even harder for me to choose. I’d say….play, risk, fail, along with shoot in manual (go together perfectly for me, since I usually shoot in AV). I am DEFINITELY that person the author talks about, who tries to learn as much as possible before going out and doing. I really have to work on that. Big time. And also, study the masters. The other tips I think I have a pretty good handle on, but of course, I can use improvement in all the areas.
Just wanted to thank you again for offering this. I bought a ton of these books a couple of weeks ago when C&V was having their $2.50 a book sale, but knowing I have to read one in a week, really helps. Not like it takes long to read them, but things just come up. So this is great!

  10. Scott Starks says:

For me #8 resonates. I’ve heard #1 many times, but simplifying what is included in the frame (or in post process :)) is a great one. It can create a really powerful image and you have to really think about how to make the subject have impact.

  11. #4 from Ten More – Learn the Digital Darkroom. The first time you enter the digital darkroom can be a bit overwhelming. Photoshop, Aperture, Lightroom are all amazing digital darkrooms. Finding one that fits your individual workflow is no simple journey. It’s a bit like choosing a hammer that feels just right in your hand. While many people feel Photoshop is the standard by which all others should be judged, I’m finding Lightroom 4 to be my darkroom of choice.

  12. I think I’m gravitating to #8 (Simplify) from Ten More. I used to look at my photos with grabbing on one small shot out of the original but looking for more than one has been an eye opener. Then again #1 (Get Closer) is good especially using my Olloclip for the iPhone with the wide angle lens.

  13. Another great read! #8 Simplify stood out to me this week. His example of visualizing an amazing (but busy) scene, and then being disappointed with the resulting photo has happened to me more times then I would like to admit. Simplified photos can be powerful and create a lot of emotion and I need to focus more on experimenting with these types of images. Sounds like I should pay attention to #5 Play, Risk, Fail a little as well!
