I’d normally check in and ask if you had a good weekend, but this has been a tough one. I really don’t know what to do or say other than continue on and try to be light for good. What I can say is that they are in my heart as I am sure they are in yours.
Today’s Photo – This is Haystack Rock off the coast of Cannon Beach, OR. I had always wanted to photograph it, and this summer I finally had an opportunity to. Have you ever photographed it? If you have, please leave a link to your photograph in the comments. I would love to see it!

Beautiful colors and light on this Oregon icon. I stayed at the Stephanie Inn on the beach back in 2005 and have some photos but I don’t think I have posted any. Great place and I hope to go back there soon.
Thanks Len…I’m surely looking forward to seeing your photos!
Here’s a link to my image of Haystack Rock.

That is awesome, thanks for sharing!
So are we just linked by some spooky psychic thing or did you happen to look at my photoblog this morning and deliberately decide to upstage me? :-)

Other way around my friend…I like yours much better! Moab this Spring!
Sorry, mate. You’re wrong again.
beautiful pic justin……yes, a tough weekend for sure. i’m 2 towns from newtown…….everyone is just dazed here.
Be safe Mel, we all send out thoughts your way.
:)
Hey Justin, great image! I would love to shoot there sometime!
Thanks Sean!
Stunning light and colour Justin. Yes it’s been a numbing weekend. Even in Toronto we are deeply saddened; at loss for words and angry about the senseless loss.
It has….this was an event that transcends all boundaries.
I definitely want to make it out to Canon Beach some time. As for this week’s book, great selection Justin. I already had this book, but hadn’t gotten the chance to finish reading it. So you’re forcing me to do it ;).
I really want to try something like the exposure blending photo on page 33. I may typically combine photos in an HDR, but I haven’t really done something like this, so it will be a great exercise. Plus I want to get to Death Valley and shoot the moving rocks. Two birds, one (or may be more) shutter clicks :).
Glad you liked it, hopefully it wasn’t too hard to finish!
If you are looking for a great course on exposure blending and luminosity masking, check this out…it is pretty awesome!

Just finished this week’s book. I think it’s my favorite so far. I LOVE landscape photography. What I liked the best? Well, looking at all the great pics, but also the section on filters. I’ve used an ND filter (just getting started with long exposure, and I love it), but I need to get some circular polarizer filters. Also the section on chasing light. Thanks for another great selection!
Running a little behind in my reading this week. Landscape photography is probably my favorite genre right now. One of the tips in this weeks selection, Portraits of Earth, says “a camera mounted on a solid tripod makes sharper images”. Instinctively, I know this to be true. Practically speaking, I seldom use a tripod. Perhaps because my tripods are sub $100 models. Can anyone recommend a decent tripod/ball head combination that won’t cost as much as my mortgage payment?
Robert…tripods really do work wonders…but they can get pricey. My only advice is buy something that you will use. If you get something too big and bulky, you will be reluctant to take it into the field.
Lines, lines, lines…. I sometimes forget and just get caught up in the moment and start clicking away! But I do like the idea of desecrating the rule of thirds. Ha Ha
I will be reading this book again. :-)
@Robert I shoot with Really Right Stuff tripods. Simply amazing, but they are pricey. But the little details put into them really are worth it.
Agreed….RRS is a buy once type of tripod…they will last forever!
Nothing like waiting till the last minute. This book is definitely worth a second read. So much good information! I just really like the whole concept that landscape photography should be treated like portrait photography, a portrait of the earth. Getting to know your surroundings, lighting times and the different effects those times have on the feeling of the shot. And really focusing on the story you want to tell with the shot. Something I know only comes with a lot of practice and patience.
No problem…you made it in with plenty of time. Your comments are great, sounds like you got a lot of out the read!
