Fleeting Creativity

This year I am wrestling with creativity. I have fleeting moments of clarity, then they fade away. Ansel Adams once said your first 10000 photographs are you worst. According to my Lightroom catalog, I should be well on my way. I have tens of thousands of photos. However, I feel like I’m just beginning to make photos. Photos that mean something. Whether they have meaning to others, I might never know, but for me, what I am working on now feels right. I feel that what my camera and I are doing is good. We will see. A few days ago, while I wallowed in my existential creative angst, I came across this frame. I made it while enjoying a soda after a long backpack trip years ago. It put a smile on my face, I hope it does the same for you.

  1. I think we all struggle with the creativity thing Justin. I think all of us always look at stuff we have done in the past and wonder what we were thinking when we took them. IMHO, I think that means we are still growing and not becoming stagnant. Great shot by the way, these birds are the hardest to capture.

  2. I’m surprised more people haven’t commented on this. I seem to find myself wallowing in self doubt once or twice a year for a stretch of time. The “I’m not good enough”, or “nothing I do seems to work out right”. I just tell myself to keep shooting. Even trick myself into a challenge of taking “the worst photo ever”, trying to take something bad. In the end, it’s about not stopping taking photographs. Just keep shooting. The major self doubt eventually passes. Plus, you’ve got major changes happening for you this year. Give yourself permission to be a bit scared, unsure of yourself, but then just keep plodding forward. You can do it.
