The Marina and the Mountain

Juneau Marina

I hope you all had a great weekend! You know that project I started working on about a month ago? I thought I would be done by now…well, I’m not. Still hard at work, but I’m about 95% there. I can’t wait to share it with you!

Today’s Image

The marina in Skagway, AK had some pretty nice boats, as most marinas do. You can’t get a boat if you can afford the slip fee I guess. If I lived there, and could afford it, I would surely have a boat. Could you imagine setting out for a weekend to explore the glassy glacial waters of Alaska with nothing but breathtaking landscapes and island chains to guide you? Sounds like a good weekend to me!

p.s. Today’s my Birthday, so I will be missing tonight’s post. Don’t worry, we will be returning to the regularly scheduled program Tuesday. See you then!

The Contrast In Flora

Alaskan Forest

Even a short stroll through the forests of Alaska will quickly reveal the lush flora that covers the state. It could have been the Bov Iver I was listening to when I processed this image, but it reminded me of the feeling I had as I made my way through this beautiful place. I was intimidated by its scale and at the same time I was curious to see what was over the next hill.

Denali Runway

Denali Landing

Landing a plane on Mt. McKinley is like landing a plane anywhere (note: this is coming from the passenger, not the pilot). Except for the fact that the runway is about 50yds long and the control tower is 22,000 feet high. Tomato, Tamoto right? The take off is really similar too. Super short runway, valley wind shears, snow….Thankfully our pilot Richard, pictured here, had it handled. This cat was as cool as a cucumber. I will say I was a bit nervous looking down the runway….I wasn’t exactly sure what was at the end.

Website Note: Because I have posted photos and stories every Monday through Friday for the last four years, I take the website experience for granted. However, if you aren’t busy categorizing and tagging content like me , you might not know that you can find other pictures from Alaska (or elsewhere) by using the category feature on the right side (or clicking on the categories below this post). Just choose your category, or scroll down to the list of all the places I have photographed, and explore until your heart is content. Click Here for more Alaska photos.

Game Changer

There is some exciting news brewing in the photo editing world. I don’t think I can share it quite yet, but a new tool will be on the market very soon. Possibly today? I actually used it to make this image. I really think it is going to be a game changer…well, it kind of already is. I’m sure you will hear about it soon enough, but I’ll share it with everyone as soon as I get the go ahead. Until then, I figured I could at least share an image I had fun processing with it. The original image out of the camera is similar to the one below. I think I accidentally exported the wrong image from Lightroom…actually, now that I look at them I know I did.

Rodeo

The first night of rodeo coverage is under my belt. Two more to go. This is going to be a very interesting story. I’m learning a lot from the bull riders. They are are great guys and really generous with their knowledge. I will be doing some more behind the scenes work tomorrow on Facebook so make sure to like our FB page so you can follow along. This is shaping up to be a very interesting story.

Here is a quick iPhone shot from tonight.

Afternoon At The Museum

Anchorage Museum HDR

You are looking at the Anchorage Museum. It is where you wait for your bus that picks you up to take you to a cruise ship. That is the obvious difference between an Alaskan cruise and a Caribbean cruise. Although I haven’t been on a Caribbean cruise, I’m guessing you aren’t getting cultured waiting for you ship. You are more likely slamming margaritas getting primed to make some bad decisions.

Rodeo

This week I’ll be working on our next story. It will be focused on the world of Rodeo and the athletes who compete in it. I will be posting a lot of behind the scenes images like this iPhone image every night on Facebook/Twitter so give our FB page a like or so you can follow along.

Also, if you have any questions for either a bull rider or rodeo clown tweet them to me or post them here or on FB and I will do my best to get them answered.
