Home In Belize

Hopkins Belize

Whenever I visit the Caribbean, you’ll never find my on the beach. I love exploring the neighborhoods and chatting with the folks who live there. The homes are always bright, beautiful and no two are alike. Today’s photo is of a small home near Hopkins Belize.

Photographer’s Note – Occasionally I love to use textures to marry the nature of the subject to the quality of the photograph itself. One of my favorite tools for adding textures is onOneSoftware’s Perfect Effects. Here’s a quick screen shot of the layers I added to create this image. If you’re interested in the tool, you can use the code LIGHTASMAGIC to save yourself some money on it. The new version just came out!

Portraits Of Pain

Rory Sutherland USA Pro Challenge

This is the vision I had in mind when I headed to the USA Pro Challenge with an unconventionally long lens. I wanted to do something that had never been done before. I wanted to push the boundaries of cycling photography. The full project will be unveiled later this year, but the goal was to capture athletes that were pushing themselves beyond their physical limits. As a long time bike racer, I know what that feeling is and I wanted to share that feeling with the world. In this image, Rory Sutherland has clearly gone well beyond his physical limits. His efforts and ability to suffer have become a product of his will.

Peter Sagan Wins

Peter Sagan USA Pro Championship

The ‘long lens project’ was a success. I’ll be able to update you on the details later. Today I had to share a photo of Peter Sagan as he roared to his 4th victory of the USA Pro Challenge. Yep, I shot this with the Nikon 500mm.

The Sittee River

The Sittee River

The Sittee River is the largest river in Belize. I believe it flows all the way from Guatemala to Caribbean Ocean. If you’ve see the Harrison Ford Movie ‘The Mosquito Coast’, you’ve seen the river. They filmed the movie on its banks. This image was shot along a quiet tributary near the mouth of the river. We were riding old cruiser bikes trying to find where it pours into the sea. We got within about 100 yards, but the jungle was too thick to make it the rest of the way.

Beauty Is In The Eye Of The Truck Driver

As you’re driving down the road, and your Spanish is limited, it’s hard to convince the truck driver that you’d like to turn around and photograph an abandoned farm. Well, that is exactly what I had to do to make this image. After some negotiation, the farmer we were hitching a ride with kindly turned back and around and let me get out to make an image. The Hummingbird Highway in Belize is filled with these types of scenes. It’s a beautiful drive!

Photographer’s Note – This is a single image developed using Nik Silver Efex Pro 2. What a great tool!
