iPhone Friday

One thing I love about the iPhone is its quiet shutter. I can take all sorts of photos while my golfing friends are in the middle of their backswing. I shot this image while doing just that. A totally stealth photo on the golf course. I was also able to leverage the silent shutter with some snakes…you know…doing their snake thing.

Have a great weekend everyone and get out there and make some magic!

Howdy! Sorry for the slight delay today, I was a concert last night. More specifically I was at my Mom’s concert. The final one of the season. It was full of pyrotechnics and 80s super rock ending. Well, not really. It did have guest artists which were simply amazing. These kids played with incredible passion. A middle school girl on violin and a sophomore boy on cello. To say they were amazing is an understatement….they were both testaments to human potential.

Photo Notes – I posted a few instagr.ams from this week. I wanted to let you know that I have been sharing photo tips over on IG. IF you are an IGer, you’ve seen my tips. However, if you’re not, you can follow me through their relatively new web interface:

The tips are quick hitters, and I hope they help you on your own creative adventure. I’ll see you back here on Monday. Get out there and make some magic my friends!

Free Workshop! I wanted to let you know I will be giving away a few hundred free passes to my Snapseed course on Udemy.com next week in my newsletter so make sure you sign up. Click Here to sign up. It’s totally free, full of cool stuff and I promise to never spam you!

iPhone Friday – nXnw via Instagram

If you have followed me on Instagr.am (@JustinBalog) you have probably seen these images, and a whole bunch more from Moab last week. They were from the 2nd Annual North by Northwest Photo Jamboree (#nXnw). What is nXnw you ask? Well, it dates was back to Austin, TX in 2011. Photographer and friend, Dave Wilson was kind enough to organize a photo-walk when I visited. Ever since then, we have organized epic photo expeditions with other photographer friends of ours. Last year was Oregon, this year was Moab.

The lesson I have learned from these adventures is a simple yet profoundly powerful one. Art is an incredible force. Without it, I never would have met any of the guys from the #nXnw adventures. Heck, until they arrived at the airport, I had never met most of them. After four full days of shooting the Utah desert, with very limited sleep, you become good friends rather quickly. That is what Art can do. It can take your world and expand it in the most amazing ways. All we have on this ball of rock are the human relations we create and maintain. They are the greatest gift the world has granted us. Art is the great uniter that builds strong bonds between good people. So go out there…make some art, meet new people and I guarantee you will create great friendships.

Here are the links to the member of the #nXnw team. I recommend you check out all of their work. It will be time well spent.

As a follow-up to yesterday’s post, I mentioned that I shoot many of my bike ride photos with my iPhone. That being said, I thought I would share a few images I made while mountain biking in the Utah desert last week. I’ve mentioned it before, but the mountain bike is an incredible tool to extend the range of the landscape photographer. The places I can reach in a day by bike would take me three days to hike to. If you haven’t considered getting into mountain biking, I suggest you do. You’ll love getting healthy by exploring the world. I also guarantee you will make great friends that will last a lifetime.
