iPhone Friday

I just want to take a second to thank everyone who visits here on a regular basis. LightAsMagic.com is now over a year old and growing everyday. I always appreciate the feedback from those out in the community. I hope to add some new features and content this year that will benefit everyone. If you like the photography, the adventure, or both please pass along the site to others who might enjoy a bit of levity in their day. I can’t spread the word without you. In honor of this milestone, I thought I would take a look back at the very first post from July 31, 2009.

iPhoneography: I have a BIG iPhone Friday planned for next week. Let’s just hope the weather cooperates!

Reviews: Every now and again, if I have used a piece of gear or software long enough, I will take the time to write a review of it. I just added a review of my DX workhorse lens, the Nikon 16-85 VR II. If you are looking for a great all around DX lens, check out my review here. Some of my favorite photos from this lens are included.

Songs For Post Processing: August’s play list is here! Just click the image below and let iTunes do its thing. I hope you like the new tunes.

_M_______

What good is a trip to the desert without images of grand vistas? I easily could have spent my entire weekend shooting the small, abandoned town of Cisco. However, there is so much more to see n’ do in Moab. Thankfully, it is only a 5-8 hour drive depending on if you visit the wineries in Palisade to pick up some fresh honey and mead for your friends back home. If you are ever visiting Moab, and driving in from the east, make sure to take the scenic byway along the CO river. Some argue it is longer, but I think it is nearly equal in distance and will provide you with some incredible images. Just make sure you add a bit of stoppage time to your plan. You will need it!

This image was made while we did a short hike down from the Canyon Lands plateau to the valley floor. I believe the trail was called Murphy’s Overlook. Don’t quote me on that, but if you are interested feel free to email me and I will confirm it. It felt so incredible to be standing in such a magnificent spot, surrounded by friends, and shooting with my favorite lens of all time, the Nikkor 17-35 AFS. Heaven on earth for a photographer.

When I get a second, I will put together a Moab resource page and add it to the Travel Guides section of the site. Let me know if there is anything specifically you would like me to include.

Songs For Post Processing – The May Playlist is published. I announced it a day late on Twitter, but it has finally made it to a post. I hope you like it. There is quite a bit of variety this month, but all of it is good. (Just click the image below, it will fire up your iTunes, and you can take a listen.)

Nikkor 17-35 AFS
Nikon CPL II (circular polarizer)

Nik Color Efex Pro – ProContrast

Tip: Lately, I have have been shooting all my images and applying the in camera VIVID picture control. That way, when they pop up on my LCD, they are rich with contrast and color. It really peaks your interest and stirs the creative muse. Later, if you don’t like it, you can just change it during the RAW conversion. Just make sure that you are shooting in RAW, and not JPG. Otherwise you won’t be able to change it in post.

Tithing

I was relieved to find out that Denver drivers respect photographers who decide to set up tripods in the middle of the road. I tried various approaches to this image, but the one that really worked happened to be from the middle lane of the street. I was quick, and the drivers were courteous allowing me to come away with this image unscathed. Actually, it was a pretty lazy Saturday afternoon and I felt like I was in a Zombie movie. There weren’t too many folks out and about. I am guessing they were all at home captivated by Butler.

I am debating if I should have cropped out more of the sky? I decided to leave it in my composition because of the interest the clouds offered. That, and I didn’t want to push my luck with texting drivers. Let me know if you think the image would have benefited from less sky.

Note: I am preparing 2 new videos for the end of the week, so I don’t know if I will be getting another image out for a couple of days. Hopefully it will be worth the wait! I will be shooting with TheBestCamera, so feel free to follow me here.

Songs For Post Processing: If you missed the April playlist you can find it here. I couldn’t wait until May to introduce the band Midlake. They are a fresh addition to my iTunes library. I hope you like them too.

Midlake - The Courage of Others - Small Mountain

The name of this sculpture escapes me. I know it is something…schizophrenic. Just looking at it, I would have guessed something along the lines of ‘Corporate Greed’, or ‘A Dagger In The Heart Of Corporate America’, or ‘Capitalism, a Tragic Love Story’. Something Michael Moore meets Stephen King. But then again, I have a hard time naming my own images. Whatever its name, it was an image shot while on the Illuminate Workshops monthly photo walk. This is a quick reminder that it is coming up again this weekend, Saturday April 4th. If you are in the Denver area, you can find more information about the photo walk here. I am 50/50 if I will be able to make it.

Taking Flight

If I were to ever record an album, I think I would use this image as the cover art. In college, when my band recorded a demo, the cover art was nothing more than contact information. Obviously my rock n’ roll fantasy didn’t work out. It sounds cliche, however my band fell victim to ‘creative differences’. I think we would have been a great band. I doubt we would have headlined a stadium rock show…..without question we would have opened for someone headlining a stadium rock show. Anyways, I added a page to the site where you can check out monthly playlists I have created to spread the word about bands I would have loved to open for. Click here to take a listen.
