iPhone Friday

My trusty 3Gs finally gave up the ghost. Well, the speaker did anyway. It was replaced by the 4, but not the one you can talk to. I’m kind of glad about that. There is a good chance I would have spent the entire weekend asking Siri silly questions. Anyway, here the first photo from my silent companion.

Fitness Challenge Update

Although I’m 1/2lb heavier than last week, I’m still Mr. Consistent when it comes to getting my work in. I have been focusing quite a bit more on Yoga. I hope it will not only improve my general core strength and balance, it will help to prevent injury as I approach the May. To combat my weight, I’m sticking to a pretty regimented diet…at least durning the week.

Morning – Oatmeal, Grapefruit, or Yogurt and coffee. Multi Vitamin, Fiber, Glucosamine Conjointin, Vit D.
10 am – Banana or some fruit and possibly a bar to get me ready for a lunch workout.
Post Workout Lunch – Veggie burrito from Chipotle (although, I’m considering changing this up??)
4ish – Walnuts or some light snack.
Dinner – Nothing regimented yet, but I try to avoid Mexican food, pizza, etc…. Generally, just something sensible.

LOTS and LOTS of water!

Then the battle begins to stave of my incessant desire to eat bowl after bowl of cereal right before bed. It is a nasty hard fought battle that I sometimes lose…but most of the time I win.

On Friday mornings however, maybe by the time you are reading this, I let myself eat a cinnamon roll from my favorite bakery.

Looking forward to hear how you all are doing!

A Photographer’s Paradise

This will be my final image from Hermosa Beach for a while. I shot a bunch when I was out there, but sometimes I like to let places cool down a bit before I process the photos. Not only does it help to dive into them with a fresh outlook, I just like knowing I have a few of my favorite photos in the backlog just waiting to be shared. It keeps things exciting in the darkroom (and the blog I guess).

New Travel Guide

Hermosa is an absolute photographer’s paradise. You can photograph everything from breathtaking sunsets to some of the best surfers in the world and everything in between without even renting a car. If you are interested in learning more about a perfect photo weekend in Hermosa Beach, check out our newest travel guide..’The Photographer’s Guide To Hermosa Beach‘.

Question….

I just discovered Hermosa Beach to be a perfect weekend photo get away, do you have any places that you like? I would love to hear about them as I’m sure others would too. Thanks!

Happy New Year!

It has been a great year!

Any year you are healthy is a great year. I think we could all just leave it at that. Getting to meet a bunch of interesting and creative people and make some art is icing on the cake.

Before we reflect on 2011, I want to thank you again for all your support this year. I truly hope you enjoy your visits to the site. Your feedback, comments, and support keep this site going. You all give me a reason to continue to make images and share them. Thanks for sharing in my belief that the world can use a little good news every now and again. I’m looking forward to spending 2012 with you!

I set out in 2011 with three goals. 1) Pursue my passion of Americana. 2) Use my camera for good. 3) Conduct a workshop. The workshop had to be delayed until this Feb, but other than that I completed my goals.

Using My Camera For Good
I volunteered for the Davis Phinney Foundation and photographed the USA Pro Cycling Challenge to help raise awareness of their challenge grant. I continue to help them by donating 1/2 of all my sales of my iPad Wallpapers and calendars.

Pursuing My Passion For Americana
My original intention was to set out an do a photo-essay on the abandoned interstates of the plains. However, what it actually became was making a movie of the American Southwest. I also started a YouTube channel where you can find all my cinematic work. Click Here.

Here is a quick look at 2011.

2011 was a year for evolution. There is a very visible evolution in the fact we have expanded our social media presence, rolled out a new look, and even changed the domain name back to where I started in 2001. There is also a subtle evolution that you may or may not have noticed. Unique photos, stories, and a bit of levity served up every Monday through Friday is still the mainstay here, but I have begun to seek out the untold stories of the world and do my best to share them. This year alone we discovered the story of The American Cowboy, Crescent Valley, a Southern California Icon, the USA Pro Cycling Challenge, and a Big Fish Story. I really hope everyone enjoyed them. I think 2012 and the future of Hossedia.com is summed up in my post from earlier this year.

The Way I See Things

The world is a beautiful place full of wonderful people. Seeking out its beauty and sharing it with others is what I do. If only to encourage others to do the same. There is something transcendent about art and beauty. It’s a common ground that breaks down the barriers that divide us. I’m a dreamer, but in my heart of hearts, I know if we all recognize and share the beauty of this world, we will make it a better place.

My Favorite Images From 2011

What good is a year in review without sharing some of my favorite photos from 2011. For one reason or another, these are the images that stand out in my mind. It could be the image itself, a personal breakthrough represented by the image, or simply a moment in my life I will always remember.

The Lion Of Utah

Utah State Capitol Lion

I couldn’t help but make this image. The color and quality of light had me mesmerized. Since there wasn’t a european runway model (or anyone for that matter) with me on the steps of the Utah Capitol I had to make due with what I had. The best portrait I could pull off in that fantastic light was this sculpture of a Lion.

News: I sent out our first free ‘Good Newsletter’ last Friday. If you received it, I hope you liked it. If you didn’t get it you can sign up here!

Reminder – Free Hermosa Beach Photo Walk

The When: Dec 17th @ 4:00pm (you can rsvp on Facebook if that makes things easier).

The Where:Let’s meet at the best beach hotel on the strand…The Beach House.

The What: Basically, a bunch of creative folks are going to be getting together to have some fun and photograph the Hermosa Beach Pier at sunset. Then we will photograph our way to The Shores to have dinner and drinks while listening to an acoustic set performed by reality TV show star Jett Pink (you can read his blog here). The event is totally free and open to folks of all levels and cameras of all types. That means the iPhone! I will be shooting with my iPhone. Get there early because I will be hosting an impromteau workshop on iPhone Photography. I’ll show you how you can make images these. If you are planning on bringing you iPhone, take a look at my iPhone Photography Tutorial so you can load up with the apps I use.

2011 – 2012 Fitness Challenge

David Zabriskie USA Pro Cycling Challenge

You were probably expecting iPhone Friday today. I decided since it is the start of the 2011-2012 fitness challenge I would share an inspiring image I shot of US Pro Time Trial Champion, David Zabriskie.

Yep, it is that time of year again, the fitness challenge starts today. Last year was a great success. The highlights were Rick Louie losing about 70lbs and started his life over, Sandra Urbacke kept it steady and shared some totally cool/fun fitness techniques, Jill broke her 1/2 marathon record and her husband Matt is pretty darn fit all the time so he is a good role model for all of us.

What? The fitness challenge is pretty simple, you state your goal and plan today by leaving a comment below and then check in every Friday (on the weekly iPhone Friday posts) until May 15th to see how others are doing, share how you are doing, etc. The challenge isn’t a competition. The goal is to help you achieve your own goal through the mutual support of one another. Simple right!

Why? If you are regular here, you know how much I believe in fitness. My fortune cookie tonight actually read ‘Happiness Is Activity’. It couldn’t have been more right. What better night to start our challenge. I also believe that fitness is an essential part of photography. Images aren’t always easy to make. Sometimes you have to hike to your destination, or carry a bunch of heavy gear around for hours at an event. Plus I have some of my most creative moments after a good rush of endorphins.

What’s In It For You? Other than good health and a fun way to keep yourself focused over the next couple of months, I usually give away a few custom prints to those that check in every Friday. Except last year, I ended up giving our winner Rick Louie a ride up into the mountains to shoot this image. Also, hopefully we will all make some new friends.

My Goal By now you are probably wondering what my goal is? Well, I’m challenging myself to something totally new. I’m going to try and race the Olukai. I have never raced a stand up paddle board (SUP) before…actually, to be honest, I have never even been on a stand up paddle board. So why am I doing it? It is easy for all of us to get in a rut and stop trying new things in life. Can you imagine if you had never picked up a camera? Well, that’s how I feel about most things in life. It’s never too late to try something new. Yes, I’m a cyclist, mountain climber, swimmer, etc..but one thing I don’t do is race paddle boards. All that is going to change on May 14th!

My Plan I actually became interested in SUP about 4 years ago. I was headed to Hawaii to play guitar in a friend’s wedding, when my mother of all people came running to the back of the plane to see if I wanted to trade seats with her because she was sitting next to one of my fitness and big wave surf heros, Laird Hamilton. I didn’t take her up on the seat exchange, she needed the seat to be comfortable on the flight. Anyway, when we got off the flight she mentioned Laird suggested I try SUPing. Apparently my mom told Laird I was quite the surfer. When we were at baggage claim I introduced myself to him and he said, “Yeah, your mom is totally cool. She says you are a great surfer”. It was pretty embarrassing to have the pioneer of big wave surfing tell you that. I told him I think my mom is just proud of me and she might have confused my love of surfing with being a great surfer. We laughed about it a bit. Long story short, Laird Hamilton was a good guy and hung out with my mom on a 6 hour flight. In the process he suggested I try SUPing. So here I am, 5 years later training to race him and Dave Kalama on their home court!

Here is photo of me, Laird, and my niece. Just incase you don't know who's who, Laird Hamilton is the Greek god in the middle, I'm the touristy guy in the fedora.

How am I going to do it?

1) I live in Colorado, so time on the water is going to be hard to find in the winter. I ended up buying a long board and Big Kahuna street paddle to help. I have been putting in 5-8 mile days at Wash Park on this thing.

2) I am only going to do exercise that fuels my soul. That means I probably won’t be going to the gym and pumping iron. I will ride my bike, snowshoe, yoga, swim, walk, balance, waterman beach workouts, climb, etc….

3) I will focus on balance and core strength.

4) I will read Dave Kalama’s blog, A Waterman’s Journal, regularly.

5) I will do my best to eat right. For me, my fitness is about 30% exercise and 70% consumption. I’m going to monitor my consumption and try to put good fuel in my body.

6) I will be making several trips to costal waters to prepare for the race. Tomorrow I will be paddling for the first time through Austin with fellow photographer and friend of mine Will. Next week I will take my newly acquired skills to the open ocean in Hermosa beach.

Well, that’s my plan. I can’t wait o hear about your goals and what your plans are. Just leave a comment below and keep checking in every friday until May 14th. Hopefully by the end of this you are feeling great about life and I have drummed up some good prizes.
