Where I Run (Warming Up)

Where I Run

I hope everyone enjoyed their weekend. It is another fine Autumn here in Colorado. I guess we can call it winter. Loveland ski area opened on Sunday.

Fitness is a big part of my life. Hopefully it is a big part of yours too. As my fortune cookie read on Friday night, He who is healthy, is young. How true! That got me thinking a bit, and I decided to take this week to pay tribute to the local trails I run. Partly because there are so many beautiful moments that present themselves, but I also hope to inspire others to go find a park or an open space area to call your own. Wherever it is, visit it a couple times a week and go for a walk, run, or ride over the next year. You will be amazed at what you find. Let it be your training partner. This will be better than anything you could do at a gym. Gyms are where you fuel your muscles. The outdoors is where you fuel your soul.

This image was made near the 1 mile mark of my evening trail run. By this time I am warmed up and actually enjoying myself. Nothing hurts worse than warming up for a run, but once you are going not much is better. Tomorrow I will post an image of the actual lake the trail circumnavigates.

Photographer’s Note: Lately I have fallen in love with my old Nikon 20mm AFD 2.8. I bought it about 8 years ago. I wanted a wide angle lens for digital camera but I couldn’t afford the super cool Nikon 17-35. Now that I have moved to the full frame sensor of the Nikon D700, I am experiencing a personal renaissance with this little guy. It is so small for being so sharp and fast. I take it everywhere.

A Reminder Of Summer

Tree And The Sunset

Fall is in the air, and I needed a reminder of the summer trails on which I train. I am sad to see summer on its way out, but I am looking forward to the changing leaves. Here in CO, we have some stunning aspen groves.

A Backdrop To Sprawl

A Backdrop To Sprawl

I was out on a ‘photo-mountain-bike-ride’ this evening and happened to catch this sunset over a new development being built near the trails. You might have seen a snapshot on Twitter about the way photographers/mountain bikers here in CO roll. The bike is a landscape photographers best friend. It really extends your range. I will have more information about this image on Friday when I announce a new addition to LightAsMagic.com. You will be surprised to see the ugliness that I had to compose out of it. Stay tuned…..

Villard De Lans

Villard De Lans, originally uploaded by LightAsMagic.

My first experience of the French countryside was a fast paced hike through the high mountain meadows of Villard De Lans as I raced to see the finish of my first stage of the Tour de France. This was also the first stage that Lance Armstrong won in the 2004 Tour de France. LA went on to win the remaining decisive stages and complete his record breaking 6th consecutive TDF win. He would go on to win the Tour again the following year.

After we had witnessed the beginning of a historic record breaking TDF we hiked back down from the ski village where the stage had ended to eat dinner with thousands of our closest French friends. What a time! It was on this descent that the crazy cycling fan in me had subsided and I was able to experience the beauty that was surrounding me. The TDF is the most scenic sports event on earth. I suggest to everyone that you visit France and let the race be your guide.
