Sculptures In The Sky: Part I

Colorado Clouds

A couple weeks back we had quite the series of thunderstorms roll through Colorado’s front range. They put a premature end to any type of bike ride I tried to do in the evenings. Well, if you can’t beat them…join them! I decided to go out and make portraits of these amazing sculptures in the sky. I will be sharing these images the rest of the week in this short series. I hope you enjoy it!

Can’t Wait To Visit!

MyFriendsPorch

Today’s Image: A couple of my good friends left Colorado last week to start a new life in Brazil. Before they left, I was able to grab one last image from their balcony. We were bummed to see them leave, but we are pretty excited to take a photo from their new porch. I guess it has a view of the ocean!

New Site Update

Here is a sneak preview of the new site’s footer. It will be a bit of a departure from the current look of LightAsMagic.com. It will also be a bit larger. Based on my stats, 90% of non-mobile users are viewing the site at a minimum of 1280px, so I decided to use that has my base resolution. The site is designed for larger monitors, and therefore will support images close to 950px in width. Over 10% larger than the current images. It is going to be big! Should be here either this Friday or next Monday.

My designer really came through with some very cool social icons to match my frontier vibe!

Holding Up My End Of The Deal

Holding Up My End Of The Deal

As a follow up to yesterday’s post, I decided to post another image from the same location. Partly to embrace the fact that I have found my coastline, and partly to encourage others to get out and make some images. So why did I choose the last two images for this reason? Because they were made with digital Point & Shoot (not a fancy DSLR), while I was out interacting with the world. She (the world) and I have an unwritten agreement. I get out outside and she promises to offer up something beautiful. I’m pretty sure the deal isn’t exclusive to me. So get out there and see what she has in store for you!

A Mountain’s Best Friend

CloudAMountainsFriend

If you are a regular visitor here, you know by now that I am pretty jealous of my photo buddies who live near the coast. The sea has always made more sense to me than the mountains. Don’t get my wrong, I love the mountains out my front door, but I could sit and stare at waves for hours on end. The coast is so dynamic. I dream about being able to return to the same location over and over again to find a completely different scene. A couple nights back I was out on a mountain bike ride when the clouds began to gather along the the front range. Every night, when I’m out on a ride, I anxiously await the sunset. I try to imagine what colors will be cast and shapes revealed. As I raced to capture the sunset that night, it struck me! These clouds and these mountains are my coastline. To prove it, here is my coast last fall.

Nightcrawler Part I: One Light Isn’t Enough

TheOldLamp

People wonder why I care so much about getting others involved in photography. Well, it is pretty simple. People passionate about art = better world. Maybe someday the message will be heard around the world. A single light isn’t enough. I really want to thank those that continue to visit here on a regular basis and help spread the word. I try my best to share the good stuff I find, with as many good folks as I can. The Illuminate Workshops Nightcrawler photo walk is one of those things. Every month, they put together an evening photo walk though the streets of Denver. You can find out all you need to know here. If you are in the area, make sure to join us on the next one. There are a lot of creative folks who are more than willing to help you out. That being said, I decided to post the images I made from this weekend over the course of the week. Hopefully that will give you an idea what it’s all about and stir up your interest in joining us in March! Even if you aren’t here in CO, I highly recommend finding an already established group, or better yet starting your own group, so you can go make images with your friends.

Illuminate Workshops

Today’s Image: This was one of the first images I shot Saturday night. I usually show up a bit early because I can’t contain the excitement. I have made many images of the Brown Palace, and I wanted something fresh. It is always a challenge to approach a composition repeatedly. I was wandering around, staring up to check out the status of the sunset, when I saw this single lamp turn on. Just a little flickr of light caught my attention. I knew that it would be lost in the scene unless I was able to isolate it. So I raked my 28-300 almost all the way out and tried to let the viewer know what I saw. When I got it back home, I applied a split toning technique I recently read about in Scott Kellby’s book about Lightroom 3. In the end, I was very happy with the image. So I was off to meet up with everyone, get our maps, and head out for 3 hours of making images with my photography friends.

Just look at this crew, who wouldn't want to hang with them. Great group of folks making magic!
