At the time I made this image, I was pretty fired up at whoever (whomever? I’m still not clear on the difference) was driving the car at the end of the alley. I waited for them to turn their lights off. My impatience turned into ‘self-swearing’…you know when you repeat a bunch of curse words in your head, occasionally they make their way out as a mumble. Didn’t the driver know they were ruining my image? Finally the driver and their car lights broke my will and I made the image. I reluctantly packed up my gear and moved along on my photo-walk. Once I was back in the darkroom, I was pleasantly surprised by what I found. Shadows, shapes, layers, mystery, and those darn lights. It was right out of a back-alley scene from a 70′s cop show. I loved it. The image made me wonder. In the end, I guess that’s what a good image should do.

If you are an email subscriber, and yesterday’s movie didn’t appear in your inbox correctly, you can find it here. You don’t want to miss it. It had the most first day views of any of my movies. Always makes you feel good when others enjoy your work. I found this little scene at the end of LightAsMagic.com’s first international photo-walk. I was pretty beat after walking through town for the last 3 hours, but I still had enough creative fight in me to compose a picture. When I see interesting little compositional elements like this, nicely grouped together, I’m easily distracted. Be warned, if you are ever walking around with me making images, I’m not the best conversationalist. It is nothing against you, its just my creative side pretty much wins all the attention battles.
Tip: If you are captivated by a scene, but you don’t quite know why. Make a couple different photos of it. Who knows what you will find when you get back home? Just don’t give up on it!
Cozumel Photo Walk

We had a great time today on our first international photo walk. I would like to thank the Coral Princess Hotel for making it possible. I also want to thank Joan (a fourth generation Cozumelanian) for the history lesson, back stage tour, and restaurant recommendations….and kickin’ my butt in Kinetic boxing.
I feel like I am a lone soldier in a battle against the American media, but I want everyone to know that this the Mexico I know and love. Cozumel is a kind, safe, and welcoming island. I hope you are able to visit sometime.
Nightcrawler Part IV – The Lone Crawler
I don’t often post 2 images, but today I thought I would. The top image is a single frame from the series of brackets I used to generate the second image (which is a 6 frame HDR). I originally intended to shoot an HDR image because I knew that technique would bring out the character in the facade. However, when I got to processing the image, I preferred the mood of the single bracket. I figured since I had both images, I would post them to see what everyone else thought. Personally, I would have liked what ever image had that darn parking light on. That would have made things so much cooler!
Nightcrawler Part III: Get on with it, check the sunset!
When we start out on a Nightcrawler, we all meet at the designated place at the designated time. The leader, Efrain Cruz, hands out the maps and advises us where we are meeting for dinner and drinks afterward. I normally listen pretty intently. However, Efrain was running through the playbook while this sunset unfolded above us. Sorry Efrain, I couldn’t wait, I abandoned the huddle and went to chase the pretty lights. Anyways, I hope you are getting the idea about organized photo walks. It is pretty simple:
1) Get a group of photographers together.
2) Map a route.
3) Make lots of photos.
4) Grab dinner and drinks.
