Brighten Our Day

Maui Sunset

I thought we could all use a little sunshine today…if you’d like to put it on your desktop, just click the image, click ‘X3’ the right-click (pc) or ‘ctrl’-click (mac) and set it as desktop. Enjoy the light!

Standing On The Edge Of The World

Last week, I asked the good folks over at Facebook if they’d like to see a few before and after images to help illustrate the awe inspiring power of the digital darkroom. I had planned on dedicating this week to it, however because of the book club and a annual teen photo contest I help with I was only able to do two days. I hope you understand. Now that we have the apology out of the way, let’s get to it!

Here is the ‘before’ of today’s photograph. I processed this image in Lightroom 4. The primary adjustments I made were increasing the contrast and clarity to give some life to the clouds and silhouettes. I then boosted the blacks and vibrancy to richen (made up word) the colors. I also adjusted a few of the hue sliders to create the color toning I wanted. I will have another before/after for you tomorrow.

In case you were wondering, this is the view from the summit of Haleakala on the island of Maui. If you ever visit, don’t let the clouds scare you away. They usually clear around 9000ft. The summit is over 10000ft, so you can usually get a good view!

Waimoku Falls

Waimoku Falls sits high above the world famous Seven Sacred Pools just outside of the sleepy little town of Hana, HI. After a spiritual four mile hike though a dense bamboo forest, you arrive at the base of this great water fall which towers 400ft above you. It’s breath taking. This image is only of the lower 10 or so feet.

Have you ever hiked through a bamboo forest? If so, what did it sound like to you? I thought it sounded like someone made a massive wind chime out of materials from Home Depot.

Photographer’s Note: I photographed these falls using a Nikon D700/Nikon 45mm PC-E and 10 stop ND filter to slow the shutter down. The entire rig was mounted on a Really Right Stuff Versa 24 and BH40 ball head. I processed the single RAW file using Lightroom 4.

Magical Maui Moment

This image of the sun setting behind Lani from the coast of Maui was one of those brief, yet powerfully beautiful moments here on Earth. As the sunset, the golden rays disappeared beyond the horizon leaving behind a few short seconds of a magical magenta glow. Everywhere I looked was bathed in this soft pink light. I never witnessed a sunset again like this one. It truly was one in a million.

This moment was so unique, I decide to offer a hand signed limited edition run of this print. You can find all the details about my limited editions page (click here)

100 Seconds To Hana

If you have ever taken the road to Hana (a quiet little town on the eastern shores of Maui) you know that the drive is a long one. I think it’s like 152,000 turns or something crazy like that…well, maybe not that many, but it will require a courageous and dedicated soul to get there. If you haven’t been on the road, I thought I would share a condensed version of the drive. I mounted my GoPro, put it in time lapse mode and shot the full 3 hour drive. Yup, here’s the entire drive from Paia to the red sand beach of Hana Bay.

Music Note: My buddy Jett Pink wrote the music used in this movie. You might remember him from his days starring in the reality TV show Flipping Out. You can get his entire album (plus a free version) on his site (click here to get some great music). The entire album is only $7.00!!!

Here is a photo I shot of him while I was out in LA working on this story. (click here)
