The scooter is the primary mode of transportation on many Caribbean islands. The scooter is used to transport both goods and people. In some cases I’ve witnessed entire families (mother, father, 1-3 children and a dog) happily cursing along on a single scooter. They are easy to park, efficient and relatively inexpensive. Over the years I have become fascinated by them. Each one is unique. In December of 2013 I set out to document the scooters of Cozumel. I rented my own scooter and spent many hours traversing the town of San Miguel meeting people and photographing their scooters. For the next month I will be sharing those images in this project, ‘A Typology of Cozumelian Scooters’.
