I Shall Call This One….Flowers

I Shall Call This One....Flowers

I wish I could claim this gem, but I can’t. It is an image my wife made while we testing out the Nikon D5000. Fantastic image and one heck of a camera. It is a great little camera for under $500. I figured others might be looking for a backup, or even a good first DSLR so I decided to write a quick (MTF chart free) review. For the full review and more great images, click here. If you have any questions, just post a comment and I will try to get them answered.

Approaching Denali – The Movie

I hope you enjoyed last week’s photo essay, Approaching Denali. As promised, here is a short movie I made from the flight. You should have seen me. My Flip was in my jacket’s chest pocket, iPhone in the right hand pocket, Sigma 15mm fish in the left hand pocket, and the D700 w/ the 17-35 on my lap. My hands were flying around and my head was on a swivel. I’m sure our pilot was worried I was going to accidentally pull the handle to the ejection seat.

I normally carry a small Flip video camera with me when we travel. It is a great little camera. If you are interested in it, feel free to read my review here:

Flip Mino HD Review

I hope you enjoy the video. I did my best to hold the camera steady in a turbulent small aircraft.

Cary Brothers is a great band (it is actually an individual singer song writer with a boatload of talent), and I can’t recommend him enough. If you liked ‘Ride’, I think you will like the rest of his work.

Another Summer

It seems like summer is just getting started. The calendar tells me it is over halfway gone. We are trying our best to take advantage of what summer has left to offer. No better way than an evening hike in the hills near our house. As you know, I have been putting the Nikon D5000 through its paces, and I am pretty darn surprised by it. If you can get over the fact that it has only one command dial and get used to doing your adjustments in the menu system, you have yourself a very capable camera. One thing that I have been wanting to test is the exposure bracketing feature. The D5000 will only allow 3 brackets, but the nice thing is you can bracket by 2 full stops. 2 stops is usually enough for most of my HDR work. For very high contrast scenes (think super bright light out the window of a room) you need more than 2 stops on either side of the anchor. However, for most of my bracket sequences, the D5000 is proving to be a great companion.

For the non-photographers out there, that interested in knowing more about this ‘photographer speak’, feel free to drop me a line. I would be happy to help you get started making images!

Red Rocks..meet NIK Silver Efex Pro

Red Rocks Amphitheater has been the home of many a great concert. There is something magical that both the crowd and the band experience. It’s feels weird, I ride or run by this place several times a week, and I have seen countless shows here, so I kind of have the misplaced sense of ownership. However, I have never been backstage. I have no idea what lies behind those brick walls. Some day I would like to find out…. actually, maybe I should leave the mystery alone?

If you are interested in the tool I used for the black & white conversion, I have added an overview of the Complete NIK software suite. If you are considering their tools, feel free to check it out..

Zen And The Art Of Tripods

In all her glory!

Yesterday I had a good buddy email me complaining that he hadn’t received his ‘Zen moment of the day’. He subscribes by email, and expects to have a photo and story in his in-box every morning when he wakes up. You can subscribe by email too. Learn how here.

I try to get images and stories out as often as I can. Occasionally I succeed at getting them out 7 days a week. This week I failed. However, this time it was for good reason (especially if you are in the middle of making a tripod purchase decision). I just added a ‘reviews’ section to the site, and the first thing I reviewed was my favorite support system. Actually, second favorite…friends and family are my first favorite.

You can check it out here:

More Zen moments soon….stay tuned!
