iPhone Friday

You are at a wine tasting, and the tour guide points out a wine press from the 1970s. It is rich in color and texture. You have a glass of wine in one hand, so operating your DSLR is out of the question. Don’t worry, there’s an app for that. All my iPhone photography is currently the product of ‘The Best Camera’. The images are shot, edited, and shared single-handedly without ever leaving the application. You can find the app by clicking the iTunes icon below.

Flickr Favorites – Friday is a great time to share inspiration. We can all go into the weekend with our creative muse primed and ready for action. One great source of photographic inspiration is Flickr. I am sure that most of the photographers that visit here are well aware of Flickr’s sea of talent. Not a day goes by when I don’t peruse page after page of amazing images submitted by photographers from around the world. I will mark some as favorites and once or twice a month go back and review them. I am just as blown away the second time. Feel free to explore Flickr yourself, or you can just click the image below. It will take you to the listing of my favorites where you can begin to discover the amazing world around us through the eyes of some very talented people.

Man In Motion – After I posted ‘Forest Through The Trees’ a fellow Flickrite brought to my attention a photographer who has mastered the abstract structure. His name is Russ Barnes. I have added him to the ‘Great Eyes’ section below, but you can find him here: http://www.russbarnes.co.uk/

I hope you find his work as inspiring as I do!

In The Nik News – LightAsMagic.com was featured again in the Nik monthly newsletter. I would like to thank the folks over at Nik for their support of the entire photographic community. To be mentioned on the same page as Tony Sweet and Vincent Versace is truly an honor. Nik’s software is not only efficient, but a very nice addition to your creative toolbox.

If you are not familiar with the Nik tools, feel free to read my overview of it here.

iPhone Friday

I had a solid week of iPhone photography. You might have seen a couple of these images in the occasional ‘Best of Day’ tweets if you follow me on Twitter.

News: Mark your calendars! I will be having a show and hosting a short talk about photography at the Indulge Wine bar on the evening of May 23rd. There will be 5-6 large pieces on display, and I will be there to answer any questions and chat about all things photography. Come down and join me for a glass of wine and some live Jazz. I would like to thank Reed Photo for helping to sponsor the event by providing their best in class print services. Please, if you are in need of any type of photo service, give Reed a call.

iPhone Friday

A rookie mistake left me in the middle of the desert without a SD card for my TZ4. Instead of heading down a path of negative self talk, I grabbed the iPhone out of my CamelBak and embraced the challenge. I found it to be incredibly liberating. No longer was I troubled with the decisions and gear that traditionally impact the tripod totin’ bracket-er. The entire weekend became an exercise in composition, vision, and creativity. Yes, I was tired and my legs were sore, but I don’t mean that kind of exercise. Having to create images with a single fixed tool, I was forced to change my focus. In doing so, I emerged from the desert with a stronger vision and my photographer’s dignity intact!

Just in case you don’t commonly scroll down to the ‘Great Eyes’ links, I thought it would be a good idea to highlight a couple new additions in a post.

iPhone Friday

You might know by now that I am pretty hip to the iPhone as a photographic tool. Sure, its flash sync speed has something to be desired (it doesn’t even have a flash), limited high ISO capabilities, no telephoto to speak of, doesn’t take filters (I’m actually working on that), its only 1.5 mega pixels, no aperture or shutter speed controls, etc, etc…. However, in the face of all that, I absolutely love it. That being said, I have decided to post my favorite pics from the week every Friday. I thought it might be a fun way to look back on the week and possibly stir up some creative juices going into the weekend. All these images were shot and edited within the iPhone using ‘The Best Camera’. If you are interested, you can find it in the app store by clicking the link. Hard to beat for $2.99.

Note: I might miss a day or two soon because I am headed to the desert. Don’t worry, I will have my iPhone + my landscape kit.

iPhoto-Walk

If you missed it, I tweeted (yep, you can follow me on twitter) images from the evening photo-walk as I shot and processed them on location from my iPhone. I had so much fun I might leave my D300 at home next time. That might be a bit of an exaggeration, the high ISO capabilities of the iPhone are a bit limited. However, all these images were captured, edited, and shared as I made them. The app I was using to do this is one developed in tandem with Chase Jarvis and is appropriately titled, ‘The Best Camera (is the one you have with you)’. If you have an iPhone, and would like to give it a run, you can buy it by clicking the link below. I am pretty sure it is the best $2.99 you will ever spend on photo gear!
