Once In A Lifetime

I hope everyone had a great weekend! We had some solid weather here in CO. Enough to remind me that I’m dreading winter. I don’t mind the seasons, I just wish the distribution was different. Six months of summer, three months of spring, two months of fall, and only one month of winter is how I would have designed it. Anyway, I have a great week lined up for us! I’m really excited for it and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did putting it together.

Remember this photo from my iPhone I posted a couple months back?

The iPhone Image

The story goes that I was out for a run one morning in San Francisco and stumbled upon this beautiful scene and had nothing but my iPhone to capture it. So I did! However, the next day I decided to head back down to the bay and try my luck with my DSLR. I chased seagulls around for a good hour, however, the image on top is as close as I got to that magic moment the day before. Further proof that the best camera is the one you have with you.

A Lucky Buck

Nik Color Efex Pro 4

I normally don’t post images on the weekend, but I thought I would share this one since there might a few wildlife aficionados out there. That and I’m sitting on about 40,000 images in my Lightroom library so I better start posting a few more. If you want the desktop, just click the image to get the larger version then set it as you desktop.

I also wanted to show you what is new in Nik Software’s Color Efex Pro 4. I mentioned you can now stack filters in the same editing session. That alone is worth the prices of admission! You can also save that stack of filters off as a recipe for later use. That being said, here is the stack of filters I used to enhance this image. As always, you can use the Coupon Code LIGHTASMAGIC to save money on any purchase from the folks over at Nik. Thanks Nik!

Here is the images straight out of my camera.

1) First, I applied a new filter called Contrast Color Range which helps emphasize details and contrast within a desired color range.

2) I then added the Brilliance Warmth filter to give it some love.

3) Finally, I added the Darken/Lighten center filter to draw the viewer’s eye right were I want it.

Chester The Sled Dog

Chester

Chester is a retired sled dog at the end of the Denali Hwy. I’m guessing he still gets to go run around Wonder Lake every now and again. He was surely more interested in slipping into a harness than posing for my camera. I had always pictured sled dogs as the classic blue eyed Siberia Husky. Not the case. They are all different, but most of them just seemed to be lanky mutts. Basically, everyone was a living underdog story. I think that’s kind of cool!

Tip: When photographing animals, shoot from a distance and make several images. They are usually so expressive and the emotion they convey changes from moment to moment. Oh yeah, if the owner will allow it, give them a treat!

Atom Heart Mother

AtomHeartMother

What good is a blog if you can’t have some fun? I shot this image while riding my bike down the back side of the Col de Tourmalet. It was a long hot ride, I drank about 19 bottles of water over the course of a 5 hour ride. As I descended I caught a glimpse of this lone bull grazing on the hillside. Delirious from heat exhaustion because of ‘The Fat Old Sun’, I asked myself if I was riding through a Pink Floyd album cover. Kind of, the Atom Heart Mother album cover is slightly different but not too far off, so I decided to try my hand and capturing the same vibe in post processing. Question to the Pink Floyd fans other there, did I get close?

King Of The Buoy

Seals

I guess if you are a sea lion, and all you really do all day is eat and sleep, it makes sense you would challenge each other to games of ‘King of the Buoy’. Between chasing fish and coming up to our boat to check us out, these guys and gals would spend their time wrestling one another off the harbor buoys. If you are ever in Juneau Alaska, make sure to look up Brandon Hasuer. He is a local photographer/guide and will make sure you get to where you need to be. You can find him here:

Tip: I find that when I am shooting wildlife, or anything where I need a faster shutter, I will put my camera in Aperture Priority mode and set a fairly small aperture (wide opening like f2.8 or f3.5). That way, I know my camera is going to set the shutter as fast as it can because it is getting the most light that my lens will allow.
